Doodlerama
Overview
Our game will be a two dimensional puzzle platformer where the player must navigate
the map by utilizing a brush and colors to reach the end of each level.
At the outset of the game, the player will take control of a faceless character armed with a
“brush”. This “brush” is both a weapon and a tool to move around the map. The player must use
the paint emitted by the brush to create platforms, deflect enemy attacks, and solve puzzles to
make it to the end. There will be numerous platforms, obstacles and hazards that will impede the
player’s progress and make them think hard about how to solve each puzzle. There will be many
levels to go through, an amount that is still to be determined.
As the player goes from the start to the goal, color tint of the map will change. As this
happens, certain platforms on the map and ones drawn by the player will become unusable until
the tint has changed again.
Game Interaction
The interaction within the game will reside heavily with the use of the brush. As stated
above, it adds a unique game mechanic allowing the player to move through each level and make
each play through a new experience. Being able to draw certain shapes and sizes allows for the
player to be as creative as possible. The colors of paint will also have different qualities such as
blocking enemy projectiles and making the player bounce higher than normal. The player must
be weary as the paint will have a meter. This meter will keep track of how much paint is left for
the player to use. Once the meter goes empty, it will have to regenerate before the player can use
paint again. On top of that, the player will encounter hazards. This has not been completely
determined yet, but some ideas that may be included could be enemies that shoot paint thinner,
only appear to the player’s eye when a certain tint is on screen, or a hole in the floor that could
lead to the character’s demise.
Game Elements
The game will include a variety of elements, but as stated above, a number of them are
still yet to be determined. Whichever are included will give the player a challenge when
encountered in any level.
Brush Colors
The brush will have the ability to shoot out primary colors including a basic white color. Red
paint will be a normal platform a player can use as a bridge over holes. Blue paint will be to
block and deflect enemy attacks. Yellow paint will make the player jump to greater heights.
White paint has no unique features.
Color Tint
This alters which platforms are usable in each level. After a certain amount of time, the color will change,
making some platforms useful again and others obsolete.
Thinners
They are enemies that patrol various areas of certain levels. They have weapons that erase the colored
platforms the player produces. They will only target the player’s colored platforms to stop their
progression.
Color Camouflaged Enemies
As color tints, these enemies will blend in with a color, making it difficult to navigate areas.
Holes
These are just basic holes at the bottom of some levels. If a player falls down one, they die and have to
restart the level again.
Gameplay
Based on how the player decides to draw with their brush, it could make passing levels
more challenging than not. They are motivated to be as creative as possible, but to also be smart
about how they draw. Earlier levels will allow the player to adjust to the color tints, conserving
the amount of paint they use, and enemy behavior. It will put an emphasis on thinking outside
the box in later levels which will require more than one way to move through to the goal.
